THE CPS PHYSICAL ASSET INVENTORY COMPLIANCE POLICY IS FACING A MAJOR OVERHAUL

During the 2021-22 school year, 77,505 devices were reported lost or stolen, which included $23 million worth of laptops, hotspots, and iPads according to a 2024 Inspector General annual report. As a result the OIG is recommending a complete policy overhaul that plans to hold staff, families and administration accountable for unaccounted public assets.

Changes Principals will face

INCREASED OVERSIGHT

Schools may face more frequent audits and stricter compliance expectations, with greater emphasis on detailed asset tracking and reporting.

FUNDS REALLOCATIONS

Principals will need to allocate resources toward improving inventory systems, training staff, and addressing gaps in vendor and technology integration. Mismanaged or unaccounted-for assets could lead to funding reallocations or increased administrative costs to rectify compliance issues.

GREATER TRANSPARENCY REQUIREMENTS

Principals may need to provide clear and timely updates to stakeholders about how assets are being managed and utilized.

Success

Stories

Protecting School Resources.

The Faronics Insight software uncovered a student using a school laptop to access prohibited content. It allowed the school to address the misuse, educate the student, and implement stronger safeguards for technology use moving forward.

Uncovered An Impending Fight.

We once uncovered a series of escalating messages between students via GoGuardian that pointed to an impending physical fight. By identifying the issue early, school leadership was able to intervene and de-escalate the conflict before it turned violent. This proactive approach ensured the safety of students and highlighted the value of monitoring in maintaining a secure school environment.

Ensuring Equity in Technology Access.

During the transition to hybrid learning, Google Admin Console revealed that several devices intended for underserved students were left unused due to configuration issues. By identifying these cases, we fixed the problems and redistributed the devices, ensuring equitable access to technology for all students, even during the most challenging times.

Recovering Stolen Assets During the Pandemic.

Using JAMF PRO we tracked iPads to surrounding school districts. By working closely with local authorities and filing a police report, the stolen devices were recovered and returned to the school, ensuring students could continue their education uninterrupted.

Keeping Students Focused.

During a particularly challenging class, Faronics Insight was used to monitor student screens and redirect focus back to the lesson. When students began veering off task by browsing unrelated websites, the tool allowed the teacher to lock screens, guide them to the correct materials, and ensure the entire class stayed engaged. This real-time intervention not only improved productivity but also reinforced the value of classroom technology management.
